Bit of a ramble on blog post about the state of Gaming & Linux.
Over 4 Years ago Valve announced Steam for Linux which in my view was one of the biggest things to happen for gaming on Linux.
Of which since then lots of Major Titles have either been launched or ported to Steam including Most of Valves Library and favourites of mine including the Truck Simulator collection, DiRT Rally, Saints Row 3 & 4, Bioshock Infinite and more.
However recently a majority of games I've brought recently are Windows only, quite a disappointment and these include:
- Planet Coaster
- DOOM (2016)
- Rise of the Tomb Raider
- Sonic Mania & Cuphead
Now there's very little reason now in my view as to why these games can't run on linux. Doom for example doesn't even use Direct X and uses OpenGL Or Vulkan, Ideal for linux!
Rise of the Tomb Raider is possibly understandable for its use of Direct X 12 and originally being a Windows Flagship game for this, However then why is Tomb Raider (2013) On linux?
And newer games like Sonic Mania & Cuphead have very little reason not to, Yes they're independent studios BUT at the same time lots of games that run on linux are also by Independents much before most of the big studios started.
That's pretty much it for this post, will more new games start releasing on Linux again or even some of these mentioned get a Linux port?
P.S Yes wine is a thing, but I find it easier to just dual boot with windows instead of using it.
