My "Ultimate" Lora Gateway Backplane

My "Ultimate" Lora Gateway Backplane

A DIY Solution I'd be happy to use as a stable alternative to a premade. I've been working on this project for about a month and a half now with changes along the way. If you follow me on twitter you'll have likely seen the progress I made. I've also been posting devleopment updates at https://hackaday.io/project/90405-ultimate-lora-gateway-backplane This post will be a mix of a summary / analysis of the current design. Designing the board I wanted to build a DIY Gateway solution which I'd be happy to put somewhere and leave. My current gateway is on the…

Blog Migration In Progress

My Blog has been down for around 16 hours now with the current host, cough scaleway cough. As they don't seem to care about their SLA or customer service I've moved back to Digital Ocean, at the time of moving to scaleway Digitalocean were still quite expensive. However now they've reduced their prices to offer a VPS for $5 a month, with 1GB of Ram and one CPU. While less in spec from previous experience their customer service is much better. I'll be starting to work on my ultimate lora backplane blogpost today and hopefully be able to move the…

Best Method of Raising Funds Online For Small Projects

When funding the first Great Yarmouth TTN Gateway I originally setup a fundraising page while I was selling a few old bits I didn't need to also fund it. This article is intended towards makers who may want to raise funds for small projects they're working on or events etc. GoFundMe I used GoFundMe for this as it seemed to have the right balance of allowing projects that would be counted as funding personal things, and I had one person donate £10. However when I went to withdraw the total fees worked out at around £3! It seemed pretty pointless…

Fun with overclocking old tech!

Fun with overclocking old tech!

If you have a Desktop computer of any kind you'll likely have overclocked it slightly in some way, weather you've done a slight tweak on the CPU, GPU or gone full out on maximizing both. But to be honest, it's quite boring overclocking sometimes now. While my CPU has had a bit of an increase my motherboard isn't designed to overclock, My GPU can overclock a little but wasn't enough of a gain to make it worth the extra heat and power consumption. However I have recently re-installed my Windows XP / 7 Gaming rig (Specifically the Windows 7 Drive) and…

Adventures in LoRaWan & TTN Part 6 - Re-mapping & Improvements

Adventures in LoRaWan & TTN Part 6 - Re-mapping & Improvements

One thing I didn't realise is that Part 5 posted before Part 4. Seeing as I missed Part 4 I thought I'd merge it into a Part 6. Since I got my gateway I've done a lot of mapping and experiment mapping at different SF factors. However a lot of this data has had changes inbetween with improvements made to the gateway by shortning the cable to the antenna, a better U.FL to SMA Connector and more. However as shown below quite a lot of the data is outdated with the range with some measurements being over a month…

Adventures in LoRaWan & TTN Part 5 - Making a sensor!

Well I have a gateway, But currently no devices to use! So let's design a simple sensor. My specification is to make two sensors at a maximum cost of £10 a sensor excluding enclosure. Being outside there's a few things we can't easily sense pressure and humidity since the sensor will be in an enclosed box. I then remembered that a potential project for my degree involved creating a IOT Fridge monitoring system BUT they don't want me to create the hardware as part of the project and to just do the coding for the system excluding the sensor itself.…

The Things Network Great Yarmouth! - Call for members

If you're in Great Yarmouth and have an interest in hobby electronics such as the Raspberry Pi, Arduino and other systems then you'll likely be interested in this. The Things Network is a Network designed to allow communities setup a network of gateways that can communicate to nodes or "things" which you can integrate into your projects. Being interested in IoT myself I have setup a gateway from where I live in Gorleston which gets good signal in most of Gorleston, areas in Bradwell & Hopton and peaks as far as Wellington Pier. So what's the community for?…

IMST iC880a LoRaWan Backplane Kit Review

As part of my new blog I plan to review most electronics purchases I make. Overview One of the improvements I've been recommended to make is to get a PCB to connect the Pi I'm using to the LoRa Concentrator board. Of which the most popular one seems to be this one by user Gnz on Tindie. ![] Photo by seller GNZ On Tindie. https://www.tindie.com/products/gnz/imst-ic880a-lorawan-backplane-kit/ I ordered it on the 30th of December and it arrived Today. Pretty good going for the fact it was the Christmas Period! The primary idea of this kit is…
